St. Patrick’s: A Haven for Migrants during Jubilee Year of Hope

(Sliema, Malta – September 2025)  – As the Catholic Church continues to mark the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025/26 and the Salesians of Don Bosco commemorate the 150th anniversary of their first missionary expedition, St. Patrick’s Church in Tas-Sliema has been designated a Jubilarian church and is reaffirming its role as a welcoming spiritual home for migrants in Malta. Founded by the Salesians in 1904, the parish now serves a diverse community with parishioners from 29 nationalities, including Filipinos, Indians, Nigerians, and Colombians. Led by Fr. Savio Vella, SDB, and Fr. Nithiyan Kunnadiyan, SDB, St. Patrick’s offers English-language liturgies, catechism, family and youth ministries, and practical support. Migrants actively participate as lectors, choir members, and pastoral leaders, while catechetical programs such as First Communion, Confirmation, and RCIA are coordinated with the Archdiocese of Malta. Sunday gatherings and parish events foster fraternity and belonging, while a charity fund supports young migrants in need. Inspired by Pope Francis’ call to “light fires of fraternity,” St. Patrick’s continues to be a beacon of hope, inclusion, and solidarity for all seeking refuge in Malta.
