One day time will end; there will be a new heaven and a new earth. So the voice of God revealed from His Throne to the beloved Apostle St John (cf. Rev 21:1-5ff):“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” Heaven and earth will not become nothingness but to something new, blessed by the light and presence if God.
Prayerfully, we study the passing of that first earth according to revelation given to “God’s messenger,” Malachi. It will be horrendous, says the prophet, a fiery oven consuming everything together with the proud evildoers. Instead, those who have lived in the way of justice will be bathed in the warm healing light of that new earth. “Thus says the LORD of hosts.” Therefore, best for us to be always ready.
St. Paul as always, urges the brethren, and us too, his brothers and sisters in faith, not to hide behind the threat of the end days, but like him, accept their share of work and work also toward eternal life. It would be presumptuous for us to put everything in the hands of God and lazily just sit back in a false notion of God’s final blessing and not do our share of work of following in the Lord’s way as did Paul. Some were going so far hiding behind religion that Paul exclaimed, “if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.” Good Christians must do their part contributing to the life of their community, not depending on others’ work.
St. Luke offers final advice as this liturgical year comes to an end. He invoked in detail the end days as described by Jesus Himself. It seemed Jesus spoke of the ruin of the glorious Jerusalem Temple, but it was Passion week, and the Temple He would offer was his life for us. His mind leapt to His second coming at the end of time.
What did Jesus envision? That antichrists would come claiming they were Him; that there would be wars and revolutions, then a lull and more wars; there would be earthquakes, famine, plagues; fearsome signs in the sky; his disciples would suffer persecution, prison, even death, but not be destroyed. Despite all, “By your perseverance you will secure your lives!” And see Heb 9:28:
”Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.”
El Señor viene
Un día el tiempo terminará; habrá un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva. Así la voz de Dios se reveló desde su trono al amado apóstol san Juan (cf. Ap 21, 1-5ss): “Vi un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva. El cielo anterior y la tierra anterior habían pasado, y el mar ya no existía.” El cielo y la tierra no se convertirán en nada, sino en algo nuevo, bendecido por la luz y la presencia de Dios.
Con espíritu de oración, estudiamos el paso de esa primera tierra según la revelación dada al ‘mensajero de Dios’, Malaquías. Será horrendo, dice el profeta, un horno ardiente que lo consumirá todo junto con los malhechores orgullosos. En cambio, aquellos que han vivido en el camino de la justicia serán bañados en la cálida luz sanadora de esa nueva tierra. ‘Así dice el Señor de los ejércitos’. Por lo tanto, lo mejor para nosotros es estar siempre listos.
San Pablo, como siempre, exhorta a los hermanos, y también a nosotros, sus hermanos y hermanas en la fe, a no escondernos detrás de la amenaza del fin de los días, sino que, como él, aceptemos su parte de trabajo y trabajemos también hacia la vida eterna. Sería presuntuoso de nuestra parte poner todo en las manos de Dios y perezosamente simplemente sentarnos en una falsa noción de la bendición final de Dios y no hacer nuestra parte del trabajo de seguir el camino del Señor como lo hizo Pablo. Algunos iban tan lejos escondiéndose detrás de la religión que Pablo exclamó: “Si alguno no quiere trabajar, que tampoco coma. “Los buenos cristianos deben hacer su parte contribuyendo a la vida de su comunidad, no dependiendo del trabajo de otros.
Al final de este año litúrgico, San Lucas nos ofrece un consejo final. Invocó en detalle los últimos días descritos por Jesús mismo. Parecía que Jesús hablaba de la ruina del glorioso Templo de Jerusalén, pero era la semana de la Pasión, y el Templo que ofrecería era su vida por nosotros. Su mente saltó a Su segunda venida al final de los tiempos.
¿Qué imaginó Jesús? Que los anticristos vendrían clamando que eran Él; que habría guerras y revoluciones, luego una pausa y más guerras; habría terremotos, hambruna, plagas; señales temibles en el cielo; Sus discípulos sufrirían persecución, prisión, incluso la muerte, pero no destruidos. A pesar de todo, “¡Con vuestra perseverancia aseguraréis vuestras vidas!” Y ver Heb 9:28:
“Cristo aparecerá por segunda vez para traer salvación a los que lo esperan ansiosamente”.
