As we begin a new Liturgical Year, our Church invites us, the chosen and loyal, together with her to “Walk in the Light of the Lord.” In Genesis, the first thing God shares on all creation is just that, light. “Let there be light,” He said, and chaos and darkness were overcome by His presence and power. Isaiah sensed God’s light and in it saw a saved Jerusalem and a new sacred hill on which rose a new Temple of the Most High. From it the Lord shall teach all creation the way that leads us back to Him. We Christians see this as God’s one true Church, rising with the one Teacher, Jesus, Eternal Word, sent by His Father, coming as our Savior and again at the end of time as our Judge. Indeed, we of whom Isaiah prophesied, “O [new] house of Jacob, come,let us walk in the light of the Lord!“
Palm 122 responds, “Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.” Other reminders follow, never go to church (our Jerusalem) compelled and sour faced, unable to pray well for we are “of many tribes.”No! “Pray for the peace of [our] Jerusalem,“ “peace and prosperity” among us in the House of God. Think, “I will pray for your good,” my brothers and sisters. Thus, we walk in the light of the Lord.
St. Paul echoes thus theme. “Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day.” That is, says Paul, do not spoil a bright friendship with God by “wild parties, drunkenness, infidelity, lust, rivalry and jealousy.” Imagine our own church community if troubled by these kinds of sinful freedom.
In St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus used a terrible example of sinfulness catching sinners unaware and plunged into destruction. Jesus recalled Noah’s time with people “eating and drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage.” Wedding parties went on and on. Celebrants saw Noah at work on the ark but took no warning. Then came the flood! “So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man,” said Jesus, and He further insisted that two men would be working in the field. One would be taken the other left; two would be at a grindstone. One taken, another left. So it was, and so it will be for carefree sinners.
We stand before a new year of grace. Our Church invites us to shut out darkness of evil and to be open to the presence and ways of God. From the start, stand open to the Spirit and to the advice of Jesus: “So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” At His coming may we delight.
Camina a la luz
Al comenzar un nuevo Año Litúrgico, nuestra Iglesia nos invita, a los elegidos y leales, junto a ella, a “Caminar en la Luz del Señor.” En el Génesis, lo primero que Dios comparte sobre toda la creación es precisamente eso: la luz.“Que se haga luz”, dijo, y el caos y la oscuridad fueron vencidos por Su presencia y poder. Isaías percibió la luz de Dios y en ella vio una Jerusalén salvada y una colina sagrada sobre la que se alzaba un nuevo Templo del Altísimo. De ella el Señor enseñará a toda la creación el camino que nos lleva de vuelta a Él. Nosotros, los cristianos, vemos esto como la única y verdadera Iglesia de Dios, que se levanta con el único Maestro, Jesús, la Palabra Eterna, enviada por Su Padre, viniendo como nuestro Salvador y de nuevo al final de los tiempos como nuestro Juez. En verdad, nosotros somos de quienes Isaías profetizó: “¡Oh nueva casa de Jacob, venid, caminemos en la luz del Señor!
Lel Salmo 122 responde: “Vamos a regocijarnos a la casa del Señor.” Otros recordatorios siguen después: nunca vayáis a la iglesia (nuestra Jerusalén) obligados y con el rostro amargado, incapaces de rezar bien porque somos ‘de muchas ‘tribus’. ¡No! “Orad por la paz de [nuestra] Jerusalén“, ‘paz y prosperidad’ entre nosotros en la Casa de Dios. Pensad: “Rezaré por vuestro bien”, hermanos y hermanas. Así, caminamos en la luz del Señor.
San Pablo refleja este tema. “Entonces desprendamos las obras de las tinieblas y nos pongamos la armadura de luz; comportémonos como en el día.” Es decir, dice Pablo, no estropees una brillante amistad con Dios con ‘fiestas salvajes, borrachera, infidelidad, lujuria, rivalidad y celos’.“Imagina que nuestra propia comunidad eclesiástica se siente afectada por este tipo de libertad pecaminosa.
En el Evangelio de San Mateo, Jesús usó un terrible ejemplo del pecado, sorprendiendo a los pecadores y sumergiéndolos en la destrucción. Jesús recordó el tiempo de Noé con la gente ‘comiendo y bebiendo, casándose y dando en matrimonio’.Las fiestas nupciales continuaron y continuaron y continuaron. Los celebrantes vieron a Noé trabajando en el arca, pero no recibieron aviso. ¡Entonces llegó la inundación! “Así será también en la venida del Hijo del Hombre”, dijo Jesús, y además insistió en que dos hombres trabajarían en el campo. Uno era llevado y el otro dejado ; Dos serían en una piedra de afilar. Uno se lleva, otro se queda. Así fue, y así será para los pecadores despreocupados.
Nos enfrentamos a un nuevo año de gracia. Nuestra Iglesia nos invita a cerrar la oscuridad del mal y a estar abiertos a la presencia y a los caminos de Dios. Desde el principio, mantente abierto al Espíritu y al consejo de Jesús: “Así también debéis estar preparados, porque en una hora que no esperáis, vendrá el Hijo del Hombre.” Con Su venida que nos deleitemos.
