Our Scriptural prayer this Holy Family Sunday leads us to trace God’s place, His guidance, and His authority in the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. First, we might notice that the opening reading from Sirach turns the family’s name around. It becomes Joseph, Mary, and Jesus.
St. Paul, much in the Old Testament style of Sirach, does refer to wives as ‘subordinate’ to husbands in the family structure, but he also holds that husbands treat their wives with all important love, calling it ‘the bond of perfection’ and the source of ‘Christ’s peace’ within the ‘one body,’ the Church, growing family of God Should Paul need forgiveness, it is well to note that this same passage where many virtues such as kindness and gentleness in the community are extolled, forgiveness is given separate notice. It is a strong part of the Christian mentality.
In recent days, St. Luke’s Gospel recorded Mary as the one to whom God sent the angel Gabriel to announce His will to take flesh among us, but it is Joseph to whom God communicates through ‘the angel’ in three decisive moments:
When Joseph, a just and righteous man, was confronted with the mystery of Mary’s pregnancy, God stepped in through the same angel to take Mary as his wife.
When Herod was tricked by the magi and sought to ‘destroy’ the Child Jesus, the same angel communicated God’s will to Joseph that he flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus.
With the danger to the Child past, it was again God’s will and Joseph’s task to guide Mary and Jesus to make Nazareth their home.
The Sacred Scriptures have led us not to lessen the glory of Jesus and Mary: Jesus is God become Man. Mary is the Virgin Mother of God. Joseph is given his honorable place as head of the family.
Una Familia Única
Nuestra oración bíblica este domingo de la Sagrada Familia nos lleva a rastrear el lugar de Dios, Su guía y autoridad en la familia de Jesús, María y José. Primero, podríamos notar que la lectura inicial de Sirach cambia el nombre de la familia. Se convierte en José, María y Jesús.
San Pablo, muy al estilo del Antiguo Testamento de Sirach, se refiere a las esposas como ‘subordinadas’ a los maridos en la estructura familiar, pero también sostiene que los maridos traten a sus esposas con amor sumo, llamándolo ‘el vínculo de perfección’ y la fuente de la ‘paz de Cristo’ dentro del ‘único cuerpo’. la Iglesia, familia creciente de Dios Si Pablo necesita perdón, conviene señalar que este mismo pasaje donde se ensalzan muchas virtudes como la bondad y la gentileza en la comunidad, el perdón recibe atención aparte. Es una parte fuerte de la mentalidad cristiana.
En días recientes, el Evangelio de San Lucas registró a María como aquella a quien Dios envió al ángel Gabriel para anunciar su voluntad de tomar carne entre nosotros, pero es a José a quien Dios comunica a través de ‘el ángel’ en tres momentos decisivos:
Cuando Jospeh, hombre justo y justo, se enfrentó al misterio del embarazo de María, Dios intervino a través del mismo ángel para tomar a María como esposa.
Cuando Herodes fue engañado por los magos y buscó ‘destruir’ al Niño Jesús, el mismo ángel comunicó la voluntad de Dios a José para que huyera a Egipto con María y Jesús.
Con el peligro para el Niño pasado, de nuevo era la voluntad de Dios y la tarea de José guiar a María y Jesús para que hicieran de Nazaret su hogar.
Las Sagradas Escrituras nos han llevado a no disminuir la gloria de Jesús y María: Jesús es Dios hecho Hombre. María es Virgen Madre de Dios. A José se le concede su honorable lugar como cabeza de familia.
