Braves Serve at LA Regional Food Bank to Kick Off Don Bosco Week—Honoring Mama Margaret’s Legacy

(Bellflower, California) – Faith in action! To kick off Don Bosco Week, a group of “Braves” from St. John Bosco High School helped out at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank alongside their moms in tribute to Mama Margaret, the beloved mother of Don Bosco who profoundly influenced his life and work. Learn more about her below!

Margherita “Margaret” Occhiena

When asked to go with her son in his work, she said: “If you believe this to be the will of the Lord, I am ready to
go.”

Mama Margaret’s presence turned the Oratory into a family. For ten years, her life became entwined with that of her son and with the beginnings of the Salesian work. She was the first, and principal, Cooperator of Don Bosco’s; she became the maternal element in the
Preventive System. Without realizing it, she was the “co-foundress” of the Salesian Family. Generations of Salesians called her and will continue to call her “Mama Margaret.”
