Serving the Community We Grew Up In

By Dr. Ricardo Quintero, Works of Mercy Coordinator

(Boyle Heights, California) – This past weekend the Works of Mercy Outreach team had the honor of bringing to fruition an idea that had been on our hearts for some time: providing clothing to those in need in the very neighborhood where we grew up.

My wife, Elva, my comadre Cynthia, and I have been serving as leaders of a new ministry that prepares and distributes burritos once a month to support our local unhoused population. As we approached the one-year anniversary of this ministry, we felt called to take our service a step further. Thanks to the donations of many generous people and the organizing efforts of many volunteers, we decided it was time to offer clothing and essential items to the under-resourced community of Boyle Heights, where our beloved Don Bosco Mission Center is located.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that this effort would also lead to a reunion from my past. Luis T., pictured here, recognized me immediately and greeted me with a heartfelt, “Long time no see!” We caught up briefly before he headed back into the neighborhood to invite others in need to come and receive items. He later returned with several community members, proudly wearing a Hawaiian-style shirt he had just picked out.

Among those who joined us was Tomasa R., who arrived with her walker and asked if we had a cane she could use instead. At 80 years old, she shared that the walker slowed her down. Pictured here with her chosen items, Tomasa thanked us sincerely for being present and caring for her and the community.

The free rummage event was held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and it was a tremendous success. We are deeply grateful to all the benefactors who donated clothing, shoes, toys, and household items, making it possible to offer this event at no cost to our low-income neighbors.

This day reminded us that service has a way of coming full circle—and that when we show up for our community, we are often blessed in unexpected ways.
