(ANS – Rome) – A new documentary dedicated to Don Bosco and his pastoral and inclusive work on behalf of young people and the most vulnerable has recently been produced and is set to be released soon on Sky Sport and the NOW streaming platform. Edited by Tommaso Liguori, the film highlights in particular Don Bosco’s insight that sport could — and still can — serve as a powerful vehicle for human growth and inclusion. In 19th-century Turin, he made the oratory and sport a model of development that remains a benchmark today.
The trailer for “Don Bosco: The Saint of Young People and Sport” was unveiled on the eve of the Feast of St. John Bosco and was immediately welcomed as a wonderful surprise by the entire Salesian Youth Sports Association (PGS) family, both nationally in Italy and internationally.
The documentary unfolds as a special journey into the heart of Salesian sport, with PGS at the center of a story that traces the history of the oratories and of those who, even today, make them a way of life.
The film takes viewers through sports settings and experiences that continue to embody Don Bosco’s educational charism, where sport is not merely competition but also relationship-building, community formation, and personal growth. It is a collective narrative, told through the voices of those who live these environments every day, transforming play into an opportunity for encounter and formation.
Numerous distinguished testimonies enrich the narrative, including Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça; the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr. Fabio Attard; and the Mother General of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), Sister Chiara Cazzuola. Also featured are Sister Francesca Scibetta, FMA national representative for PGS, and Fr. Francesco Preite, president of Salesians for Social and national representative of the National Center of Salesian Works (CNOS) for PGS.
The documentary also includes contributions from Salesian Past Pupils, including Gianni Petrucci, president of the Italian Basketball Federation, and Ciro Bisogno, current president of PGS. Additional voices include former Italian national volleyball coach and current Member of Parliament Mauro Berruto, as well as journalist Francesco Giorgino. Completing the mosaic are coaches and athletes from past and present, including soccer player Edoardo Bove and Valerio Vermiglio, Olympic silver medalist in volleyball at Athens 2004.
Ahead of its public release on Sky Sport and NOW, the trailer is already available online.
