Blooming Together: April News from Salesian Family Youth Center

(Boyle Heights, California) – Spring is here, and we’re excited for everything happening at our Youth Center! Our sports programs are in full swing, and March was packed with action and memorable moments. We can’t wait to keep the energy going this season as we gear up for an incredible summer camp!

Leaders in Service: Girl Scouts Support Long Beach Clean-Up

On March 21, our Girl Scouts participated in a Long Beach clean-up as part of their Take Action Award, joining Justin Rudd and his team. The girls helped remove litter, protect marine life, and make a positive impact in their community. They also enjoyed some fun time in the water together after the clean-up!We are proud of their teamwork, leadership, and commitment to giving back to the community.


Choosing the Name, Shaping the Story

On March 10, students from Roosevelt High School took part in a special session led by Max to explore and choose possible titles for their upcoming book. His supportive approach encouraged creativity and thoughtful reflection, moving the project closer to publication and uplifting student voices.


A Slam Dunk Season for Our Youngest Athletes

Our Pee Wee Basketball division recently wrapped up its first season through our partnership with Variety Boys & Girls Club. Our youngest athletes had the opportunity to learn a new sport, while those with experience were able to showcase their skills. It was a fantastic season, and the kids truly enjoyed every moment!


Grateful for Service: St. Mary’s Academy Volunteers Shine

With a large site to maintain, there are times when we can use a helping hand. We were grateful to welcome students from St. Mary’s Academy, whose freshman class generously volunteered their time to help clean and organize our space. They assisted with cleaning chairs and desks, organizing books, and sweeping and mopping the club. Their extra support made a meaningful difference, and we truly appreciate their hard work and service!


Steering into the Future: Students Complete Driver’s Education Course

Our SHOUT Driver’s Education class successfully completed its five-week course. Through this program, students were able to take the class free of charge while gaining essential knowledge and skills for safe driving. Participants are now eligible to visit the DMV and take their permit test, marking an important step forward. This program continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting and empowering our community through accessible education.


Mamba League Wraps Up Season with Skill-Building Clinic

Our fourth season in the Mamba League is coming to an end, but not before one final highlight. Students recently had the opportunity to participate in the Mamba Clinic, which provides a great introduction to basketball fundamentals for those who may be new to the sport. Participants learned how to play the game, work as a team, and, most importantly, enjoy the experience. The clinic emphasized skill-building, teamwork, and the importance of having fun on and off the court.


Faith & Fellowship: Soccer and Reflection at Club Don Bosco

Last Friday, 40 youth gathered at Club Don Bosco for soccer and a time of reflection. Inspired by the Gospel, they were encouraged to practice daily gratitude in their everyday lives. Looking ahead, a pool activity is planned for this Friday as the youth continue their spring programming together.


SHOUT Robotics Team Showcases Skill and Creativity at Event

The varsity robotics team, part of the SHOUT after-school program, recently participated in a school robotics event where they showcased their hard work, creativity, and technical skills. Competing against many teams, they earned 21st place overall. While the ranking was modest, the experience proved invaluable, as students demonstrated their robot’s design and performance, learned from fellow competitors, and gained insight for future competitions. The event highlighted the team’s dedication and marked an important step in their continued growth and development.


Shining on Stage: Drill Team Competes at Regional Competition

The Drill Team, representing Theodore Roosevelt High School and the SHOUT After School Program, recently participated in a regional competition alongside many other schools. The team proudly showcased their dance routine, highlighting their coordination, energy, and dedication. Under the guidance of their new coach, Mr. Ricardo, the team delivered a strong performance that reflected his positive impact and leadership. The competition provided a meaningful opportunity for the team to represent their school and program while continuing to grow and improve.


Creativity in Action: Bravo Art Club Explores Emotions Through Slime

Our Bravo Art Club is having a great time making slime together! At the students’ request, we turned the activity into something extra special by choosing colors that reflected their emotions. Each student selected different shades to express how they were feeling that day, making every creation unique. We also added a variety of textures to create a calming, sensory experience. Stretching, squishing, and mixing the slime gave students a fun way to relax their bodies while expressing their creativity.


Spreading Kindness: Students Attend 2026 Kindness Summit

We had the honor of attending the 2026 Kindness Summit, and our students had a wonderful experience. They learned that giving back and showing kindness doesn’t require much—just a willing heart. Students participated in workshops centered on kindness and service, and they also volunteered by assembling hygiene kits for children in Skid Row. It was a meaningful day of learning, reflection, and action.


A Season of Reflection: Youth Gather for Lenten Retreat

This Holy Week, our youth from St. Mary’s, St. Isabel, and the Salesian Family Youth Center gathered for a Lenten retreat. Through reflection on Holy Week, they explored their values, relationships, strengths, and personal mission. Guided with patience and care, they were invited to reflect deeply on meaningful questions such as, “Who leads my life?” and “What gives my life meaning?” It was a thoughtful and prayerful experience that encouraged growth and self-discovery.
