(ANS – Granada) – On August 18, an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the province of Granada in southern Spain, causing material damage and leaving three people with minor injuries. This was the second seismic event to strike the area in a matter of days: on August 15, another earthquake of the same magnitude caused damage, but fortunately no one was injured. In the meantime, there have been numerous aftershocks, which are understandably causing concern among the local population.

Among the buildings that sustained damage is the Salesian house in Granada, located in the Zaidín neighborhood. Damage was found there, but no one was injured.

Condition and Technical Assessment of the Buildings

Meanwhile, as local councils and authorities assess the effects of the earthquake, at least 18 churches in the city remain affected, either closed or under inspection, including the Church of Mary Help of Christians. The Salesian community has reported significant cracks in the church, particularly in the sanctuary wall, as well as damage to ornaments, furnishings, the sacristy, restroom facilities, and other areas. The statues of Don Bosco, Mary Help of Christiansy Dominic Savio were not damaged and have been temporarily moved to a safe location. The church will remain closed until technicians have assessed its condition and ensured that it is safe.

Furthermore, cracks, loose tiles and ceiling panels, as well as problems with the windows, have been identified in the school building. Following an initial assessment by emergency services, access to the building has been restricted as a precautionary measure. An official inspection by engineers is scheduled to assess the extent of the damage and plan the necessary repairs.

In the meantime, dozens of local residents are waiting for life to return to normal at the sports complex adjacent to the Salesian school, where they are receiving support during this period of uncertainty and fear.

As explained by the Salesians in Spain, the Salesian school in Granada will continue to provide updates as soon as it receives precise information from technical experts. Given the situation, the entire city of Granada is entrusted to the protection of Mary Help of Christians.
