Inspiring Change: 2021 Salesian Youth Leadership Conference Leaves a Lasting Impact

By Luis Chacon

The Salesian Youth Leadership Conferences (SYLC) of 2021 brought about a unique and innovative approach, combining in-person participation at local Salesian presences with virtual connections to other groups across the Salesian Province of the Western United States. Despite the challenges posed by the hybrid modality, this SYLC has proven to be transformative, giving rise to a remarkable idea that has already made a profound impact on the lives of more than 10,000 people. This article explores how a young participant’s initiative has sparked a movement of compassion and collaboration within the Salesian family.

SYLC’s Compassionate Legacy:

Following the SYLC, a young participant from the local site of the Salesian Family Youth Center shared a heartfelt idea: to make a difference in the lives of people in the community. With the support of SYLC 2021 educators and participants, they embarked on a mission to prepare food packages for the homeless. This act of kindness marked the beginning of a monthly Homeless Outreach initiative, where volunteers ranging from 7 to 60 years of age gather on Sunday mornings to prepare over 500 sandwiches. These sandwiches are then distributed primarily to those living on the streets of Skid Row.

Collaboration and Unity:

What started as a young person’s idea has evolved into a collective effort that transcends boundaries and unites the Salesian family from Southern California. The Homeless Outreach initiative has brought together various groups and individuals who share a common commitment to serve the marginalized:

  • Salesian Cooperators – Members of the St. Joseph Salesian Retreat House and Saint Dominic Savio Parish have enthusiastically joined the cause, lending their support and expertise.
  • Camp Savio and Salesian Oratory – Counselors from Camp Savio and the Salesian Oratory of St. Dominic Savio Parish have actively participated, infusing the initiative with their energy and dedication.
  • Students from Salesian Schools – Students from St. John Bosco High School, Bosco Tech, and Sacred Heart have demonstrated their compassion and solidarity by actively engaging in the Homeless Outreach initiative.
  • Salesian Family Youth Center – Youth, children, and staff members of the Salesian Family Youth Center have become the driving force behind this initiative, exemplifying the spirit of service and leadership.
  • International Volunteers – Volunteers and ex-volunteers from various countries, including Bolivia, Mexico, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Spain, Russia, and more, have contributed their time and efforts to this worthy cause, enriching the initiative with diverse perspectives.
  • Salesians – Priests and brothers from the Salesian community have played a vital role in guiding and supporting the initiative, nurturing the spirit of service among the participants.

Inspiring Global Impact:

The impact of this young participant’s idea has exceeded expectations. The Homeless Outreach initiative has not only fed over 10,000 people but also inspired countless young individuals to make a difference in the world. For some, this experience has been a defining moment, leading them to donate months or even a year of their lives in service to others in different countries. The ripple effect of compassion and generosity initiated at SYLC has extended far beyond local boundaries, spreading hope and transforming lives on a global scale.

The 2021 SYLC’s hybrid modality presented a unique opportunity for participants to connect, collaborate, and inspire change. Through a simple yet powerful idea, a young participant has ignited a movement within the Salesian family, resulting in the Homeless Outreach initiative that has fed thousands of people and brought together diverse groups and individuals in service of the marginalized. The impact of this initiative has not only provided sustenance to those in need but has also inspired countless young people to dedicate their lives to making a difference. This remarkable journey is a testament to the power of compassion, unity, and the transformative potential of the Salesian spirit.
