Salesian Family Youth Center Empowers Parish Communities

It has been more than a year since the Mission Animation Team of the Salesian Province of the West of the United States embarked on a remarkable journey of collaboration with various parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Their mission extended beyond sharing the Salesian Family Youth Center; they sought to disseminate the profound Salesian charism and mission to the wider community. This noble endeavor has been made possible through the Pontifical Mission Societies in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles – Mission Office, who graciously provided the team with opportunities to preach in local parishes about the transformative work undertaken by the children of Don Bosco at the Salesian Family Youth Center.

Recently, an enlightening Sunday service took place at Our Lady of Solitude Parish on Cesar Chavez Street. In the absence of a Pastor, the parish administrator, Deacon Sergio, a former Salesian High School student, has diligently supported the administrative and spiritual aspects of parish life. This particular Mission Appeal witnessed the presence of a revered guest, Fr. Fabian Cárdenas, the Youth Ministry Delegate of the Salesian Province of the West of the United States. Fr. Fabian eloquently preached about the importance of fostering a sense of community to achieve both human and pastoral goals. Accompanying him were JC Montenegro and another speaker who jointly conveyed the message that every individual possesses a unique mission in life, akin to the Prophet Jeremiah’s divine calling.

Throughout the sermon, attendees were encouraged to reflect not on the “why” of life’s challenges but on the “how.” Drawing inspiration from the experiences of biblical figures such as Jeremiah, Paul, and the Virgin Mary, it became evident that from the depths of difficulty and adversity, God reveals His mission to each of us. Just as Jeremiah did not seek enmity with his fellow countrymen, Paul harbored no ill intentions, Mary never wished to lose Jesus, and Don Bosco tragically lost his father at the tender age of two, their journeys paved the way for their unique and impactful missions.

The central teaching that emerged from this reflection was clear: amidst life’s tribulations, challenges, and uncertainties, God uncovers His mission for us. It was an invitation for the parish community to introspect and discern the mission that God is currently entrusting to them. As the words of Jesus remind us, “there is nothing hidden that will not be discovered.”

To exemplify the miracles that occur at the Salesian Family Youth Center, the team shared heartwarming stories of transformation and hope. These tales touched the hearts of members of Our Lady of Solitude Parish, prompting them to take action and lend their support. Inspired by the Salesian spirit and the mission of accompanying and empowering young people, several individuals from the parish community have eagerly volunteered to prepare meals for the children benefiting from the Youth Center’s services.

The collaboration between the Mission Animation Team and the parishes of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has given rise to a powerful synergy. The Salesian charism, with its focus on love, kindness, and compassion, has resonated deeply within these communities. By witnessing the transformative impact of the Salesian Family Youth Center and embracing the call to serve others, the parishioners have become active participants in Don Bosco’s mission of guiding and nurturing young hearts.

This inspiring partnership between the Mission Animation Team and the parishes not only strengthens the bonds within the Salesian Family but also fosters a sense of shared responsibility in the pursuit of social and spiritual transformation. It is a testament to the enduring power of collaboration, community engagement, and the embodiment of Salesian values.

As this beautiful journey continues to unfold, we eagerly await the countless ways in which the Salesian Family will impact the lives of young people throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Together, they will create a future that is built upon solidarity, love, and the unwavering belief in the innate goodness of every individual.

May the Salesian charism and the mission of Don Bosco continue to inspire and guide us all in embracing our unique roles and missions in this world, for “there is nothing hidden that will not be discovered.”
