As the coordinator of the Salesian Volunteer Program, I recently had the privilege of visiting two incredible camps, Camp Don Bosco in Corpus Christi, San Francisco, and Camp St. Francis in Aptos, California. These camps are home to remarkable children and adolescents who embody the spirit of the Salesian Family, fostering warmth, family-like atmosphere, and a strong sense of community. Led by dedicated Salesian figures and passionate volunteers, both camps are making a profound impact on the lives of young people, nurturing their faith, leadership skills, and cultural heritage.
Camp Don Bosco: A Haven of Joy and Empowerment
Located in the heart of San Francisco, Camp Don Bosco is a place where 50 incredible children and adolescents come together to experience joy, growth, and companionship. Under the loving guidance of Sister Mary Link and the SDB community, overseen by the remarkable Community Director and Parish Pastor Fr. Thomas Anthony Thodukulam, the camp exudes dedication and love for every individual present.
During my visit, together with the Salesian Delegate of the Salesian Youth Ministry, Fr. Fabian, we were warmly welcomed into the camp’s vibrant atmosphere. Our guided tour, led by Fr. Tom, allowed us to witness firsthand the heartwarming stories and memories created by the campers. The energy and joy were palpable as we bonded with these young souls, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.
A special acknowledgment goes out to Mia, Sandra, and Gaby – three inspiring leaders who were once participants of the Salesian Youth Leadership Conferences (SYLC) in June. Their decision to share their knowledge and experiences with the campers reflects their commitment to empowering the younger generation to become compassionate and confident leaders. Their dedication is truly remarkable and deserving of admiration.
Camp St. Francis: Cultivating Cultural Heritage
Situated in the picturesque town of Aptos, California, Camp St. Francis is home to over 150 children and young people, providing a nurturing environment for growth and exploration. The camp is led by Fr. Vien (SDB) and supported by Br. Quang Nguyen, SDB, Br. Khoa, Br. Al, and a devoted team of lay individuals who are wholeheartedly committed to the Salesian mission.
What sets Camp St. Francis apart is its continuous operation, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. This unwavering commitment ensures that campers receive ongoing support, guidance, and opportunities for personal development. The dedication of the Salesian team and volunteers at Camp St. Francis is commendable and is a true reflection of their mission to empower young people.
One of the most distinctive aspects of this camp is its focus on promoting and preserving Vietnamese culture. The leaders and participants are predominantly Vietnamese, and they take pride in celebrating their language, cuisine, and traditions. Camp St. Francis serves as a beautiful platform to pass on the richness of Vietnamese heritage to the younger generations.
Conclusion: A Journey of Empowerment and Cultural Celebration
My visits to Camp Don Bosco and Camp St. Francis were incredibly inspiring and heartwarming experiences. The Salesian Family’s commitment to empowering youth, nurturing their faith, and preserving cultural heritage is evident in every aspect of these camps.

Tom, Sister Mary, Mia, Sandra, and Gaby – thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to the Salesian Youth Ministry.
