Strengthening Commitment: SHOUT Program Coordinators Drive Excellence at SFYC

By Luis Chacon

The Salesian Family Youth Center (SFYC) has always strived to be more than just a building, it emphasizes a dynamic and growing spirit that extends far beyond its physical boundaries. A true testament to this vision is the SHOUT Program, an After School Program run by SFYC at Roosevelt High School. As an essential component of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell Branch, the SHOUT Program collaborates with quality agencies to ensure the delivery of exceptional After School Programs.

As part of their commitment to excellence, coordinators Angel Castillo and Angy Castillo, from SFYC, recently participated in a pivotal meeting hosted by Beyond the Bell, focusing on reviewing contracts, protocols, procedures, and more.

A Collective Effort for Excellence

The meeting was titled “Essential Information for Expanded Learning Programs” and gathered key figures from various agencies to address crucial aspects of the SHOUT Program and other After School Programs. Angel Castillo, Angy Castillo, and Luis Chacon represented SFYC, while Beyond the Bell had prominent personnel like Debe Loxton (Executive Director), John Han (Administrator), and Raul Chagoyan (Operations Coordinator) in attendance.

The Objective: Understanding Grant Requirements and Submission of Required Documentation

The primary objective of the meeting was clear—to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Grant Requirements and the Submission of Required Documentation. Funding and support play pivotal roles in the success of After School Programs, and this session sought to ensure that all agencies involved were well-versed in meeting these requirements.

Safety First: Protocol and Procedure for Safe Access to Facilities

A significant aspect emphasized during the meeting was the safety of all students attending schools and centers that participate in After School Programs. The protocol and procedure for Safe Access to Facilities, particularly during Emergency Drills, were thoroughly explained. Preparedness and swift action are vital in emergencies, and all staff members were equipped with the knowledge to apply relevant protocols to safeguard students and personnel.

The District’s Goals and Aspirations

The Los Angeles Unified School District has set ambitious yet meaningful goals for the After School Programs it supports. These goals include achieving a 100% graduation rate among learning program participants, ensuring 96% in-school attendance for expanded learning program participants, fostering enhanced parent and community engagement, and providing a safe, caring, and nurturing environment for students.

The SHOUT Program at the Salesian Family Youth Center remains committed to enriching the lives of students, extending beyond the academic realm to nurture their holistic development. The recent meeting organized by Beyond the Bell served as a crucial stepping stone in the pursuit of excellence, where coordinators Angel Castillo and Angy Castillo, along with Luis Chacon, reaffirmed their dedication to meeting Grant Requirements, following essential protocols, and contributing to the attainment of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s goals.

As the SFYC continues to move forward, its spirit of growth and collaboration remains steadfast. With the ongoing support and commitment of all stakeholders involved, the SHOUT Program will undoubtedly continue to thrive, positively impacting the lives of countless students and strengthening the Salesian Family’s mission in the Western United States.
