One Day at a Time…

By Luis Chacon

Last week, a troubling incident unfolded right outside the Salesian Family Youth Center (SFYC) that left us with mixed feelings of concern and gratitude. As JC and I were leaving the SFYC, we witnessed a disturbing altercation involving three high school students from a nearby school. It was a situation that highlighted the critical role that the SFYC plays in our community, providing a safe haven and guidance to over 2000 children and young people in the area.

As JC and I crossed the street from the SFYC, we noticed three young high school students on the other side. What started as a seemingly ordinary day took a troubling turn when a car suddenly screeched to a halt next to them. The driver and two other students emerged from the car, and without any hesitation, a heated exchange erupted into a physical altercation.

These young students began yelling at each other, and within moments, we watched in disbelief as one of the girls ended up on the ground while the others continued to fight. Time seemed to slow as we stood on the opposite sidewalk, feeling utterly helpless.

We felt a deep desire to intervene and help, but circumstances prevented us from taking action. The speed of passing cars on the street made it impossible for us to cross safely. Additionally, we were concerned about potential legal repercussions, given that the students were likely minors, not on SFYC property, and unknown to us. It was a heart-wrenching moment of powerlessness.

Fortunately, a glimmer of hope emerged when a child who was arriving at the SFYC recognized the students and the school they were from. This individual had a connection to them, but despite this knowledge, JC and I were left in a quandary about how to proceed.

In the aftermath of this incident, JC and I took a moment to reflect on the critical role the SFYC plays in our community. It serves as a sanctuary and a guiding light for thousands of children and young people. The SFYC offers a safe and nurturing environment where young minds can flourish, and they can find positive role models who inspire them to make better choices in life.

Our community is not without its challenges, and there are times when we may wish we could do more to address them. Yet, we must recognize that our resources are limited, and progress often comes one step at a time. The SFYC stands as a beacon of hope, providing an invaluable refuge for our youth.

In times like these, it’s important to remember the old saying, “One day at a time.” This adage reminds us that even when faced with overwhelming challenges, we can make a difference by taking small, meaningful steps each day. The SFYC embodies this spirit as it continues to make a positive impact on the lives of the young people in our community, one day at a time.
