Aptos, CA – In the midst of the bustling demands of daily life, the Salesians in Northern California recognized the need for a pause, a moment to reflect, and a space for spiritual renewal. About twenty Salesians gathered at Camp Saint Francis in Aptos for a Quarterly Day of Recollection, a purposeful day dedicated to introspection, meditation, and rejuvenation.

The morning culminated in a meaningful celebration of the Eucharist, with Father Mel presiding. In his homily, he challenged the Salesians who were present and himself to approach the ministry with not only a focus on rules and laws but also with compassion, mirroring the empathy that Jesus showed to those who sought him. Father Mel urged a willingness even to let go of certain traditions if necessary, drawing inspiration from Jesus’ act of breaking the Sabbath law to heal a man with a withered hand.

After lunch and a brother break, Father Joe Nguyen, the Novice Master, led the Salesians through reflection on vocation. Drawing from his six years of experience as a novice master, he shared the challenges and blessings of his journey. Father Joe emphasized the importance of motivation in the formation process, encouraging the Salesians to reflect on their motivations for their continuing “Yes.” Is it driven by the love of God or by a personal pursuit of life?

A novitiate year, according to Fr. Joe, could be likened to a honeymoon, a boot camp, or a combination of both. Motivation, he stressed, plays a pivotal role in shaping the novice. Ultimately, loving God is the driving force behind one’s vocation. Also, he urged all Salesians to continue the Salesian identity as second nature. According to his reflection, we are Salesians becoming Don Bosco’s companions and Christ’s followers.

As the day unfolded, the Salesian Brothers and Priests found themselves not only engaged in personal reflection but also united in a shared purpose. The Quarterly Day of Recollection became a collective journey toward a deeper relationship with God. That relationship will not happen if we do not have compassion for others.

Overwhelmed with the beauty of Camp Saint Francis, the Salesians of Northern California appreciated the day that was not just a pause but a transformative experience, fortifying their commitment to their ministry and the Salesian mission.
