(Los Angeles, California) – In the heart of East Los Angeles, the St. Mary’s and Santa Isabel parish communities gathered for a workshop, signaling a new era of focus and importance in youth ministry. The joy among the parishioners was noticeable as they happily welcomed Fr. Marco Cesar, their new pastor. With Fr. Hector Franco by his side, they were eager and ready to launch this new chapter for both parishes.
The workshop was a listening session for Fr. Marco and Fr. Hector, and the province Youth Ministry Delegate, Fr. Fabian Cardenas, the workshop’s leader. However, rather than taking the spotlight, Fr. Fabian created a way to hear what the parishioners thought about today’s young people’s needs. Fr. Fabian presented the Salesian vision and goals, laying the foundation for small groups to vocalize their ideas.
This session provided a platform for parishioners to express their perspectives on youth engagement. A variety of ideas were tossed around. The eye-opener was hosting a listening session with the local young people to understand their desires and what changes need to be made for them to feel more included in the parish community. The urgent need for an oratory and brainstorming on retaining our current Confirmation candidates in the parish after Confirmation also surfaced. The collaborative sharing of ideas sparked a vibrant exchange, ultimately shaping a youth ministry that authentically aligns with the genuine needs and aspirations of the community.
The spotlight then shifted to the local level, introducing the youth ministry animation team for the Boyle Heights Area, led by the passionate Fr. Marco Cesar, with support from Fr. Hector, Luis Chacon, Anna Rosales, Sr. Estela Navarro, Mario Barrios (a current volunteer from Colombia), and yours truly. The team understands the urgency and importance of getting to work for the benefit of the young people.
The workshop ended with a renewed commitment from Fr. Marco, Fr. Hector, and our dedicated team leading the way to ensure that all the participants’ ideas and recommendations are considered as we continue to plan for the upcoming year. St. Mary’s and Santa Isabel are ready for a journey that will improve the lives of young people and strengthen the community.
