(Los Angeles, California) – On Saturday, February 22, 2025, the Works of Mercy team from Don Bosco Mission Center gathered and prepared burritos, snacks, and clothing resources to serve the homeless in the local neighborhood and on Skid Row. The following reflection offers insights into their outreach.
We had three cars full of donations and more volunteers for February’s outreach to the homeless. Given the 200 burritos the kitchen team prepared, we served waters, animal crackers, and snacks. We also gave out forty $10 gift cards to McDonald’s on behalf of St. Joseph Retreat Center parishioners. Those in need deeply appreciated it, along with other things like used luggage, bags, and a box full of socks.
The highlight for me was handing out water and a Litany of Trust prayer card. A homeless man said, “I know litany. I’m college educated.” I asked if he wanted a Covid test kit, and he replied, “I need five dollars for weed.” I indicated, “All I have is a Covid test.” He busted out laughing and said, “You got me!” We all had a good hearty laugh in the midst of folks who were smoking pot, high as a kite, and living in deprivation and grime. There were many young men at the park. They took everything we offered, including a cardboard box and broken luggage.
The number of folks living in Skid Row is alarming and heartbreaking, especially when I see a mom with a baby in a stroller. There are about 30 children from different countries around the Refresh Spot, which is open 24/7 with a laundromat service, showers, a bathroom, a charging station, and pet care. Some were from Guatemala, and because they don’t have papers, they are not in school. The situation is very disheartening, but they seem to be as happy as a clam, so I can’t imagine the horror from which they escaped.
Overall, we continue to feed, clothe, and give drinks to our friends on the street, hopefully showing them that they matter and have dignity. Offering prayers is often welcomed and met with tears when praying for children or loved ones. May God continue to give us strength and tenacity to continue co-creating God’s kingdom here on earth.
The next feeding will be on Saturday, March 29; volunteers are needed. Please see the flyer below and RSVP if you can participate.
