This third Sunday C of Lent places us before the Burning Bush as God proclaims Himself to be the Being of all Being. It is a fundamental statement that God is at the center of all that exists, that he was, is, and always will be the source of everything that is. He is the creator and the One who sustains the heavens, earth, and all that exists, for He is Existence itself. That is what God meant when He sent Moses to tell the Israelites and the Pharaoh that God, “He Who Is,” the “I AM,” “JAHWEH” had sent him.
The ‘Burning Bush’ still exists and has even survived transplanting at the Monastery of St. Catherine of Alexandria at the foot of Horeb, the Mountain of God, where Moses received the Commandments. During our earthly journey, they are the guideposts that guide us to the Throne of God. He is the Light, the Fire that burns but does not scorch, the source of all holiness before whom and in whom we are destined to live forever. God Himself wills to be our inheritance when we enter eternal life!
I often smile when I think of an incident that took place at St. Catherine’s. We stood in front of the thriving Buring Bush. One of our companions felt compelled to have a souvenir, and he reached out to pluck one of the lush green leaves. But with an ‘ouch!’ he quickly pulled back his hand. Showing it to us we saw a perfect imprint of the leaf as if burned on his thumb and forefinger. With today’s readings in mind, God seemed to have told us, “Not now, my sons. Later in the Holy of Holies in Heaven.”
Consider! St. Paul thinks of the evil tendencies and deeds that have led others into a sinful life and at death destruction. He demands a wiser course: “These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come at death.” Never tire of living a good life.
Pray! Jesus advises not to think yourself better than thought to be sinners, like those dying by execution under Pilate, or by accident at the collapsed tower at Shiloh, “But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” Don’t exhaust God’s mercy sin after sin, “Whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.”
Paul: “We implore you, … be reconciled to God.”
Dios Mi Herencia

Este tercer domingo de Cuaresma nos coloca ante la Zarza Ardiente mientras Dios se proclama a sí mismo como el Ser de todo Ser. Es una afirmación fundamental que Dios está en el centro de todo lo que existe, que fue, es y siempre será la fuente de todo lo que es. Él es el creador y el que sostiene los cielos, la tierra y todo lo que existe, porque Él es la Existencia misma. Eso es lo que Dios quiso decir cuando envió a Moisés a decirles a los israelitas y al Faraón que Dios, “El Que Es”, el “YO SOY”, “JAHWEH” lo había enviado.
La “Zarza Ardiente” todavía existe e incluso ha sobrevivido al trasplante en el Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Alejandría al pie del Horeb, la Montaña de Dios, donde Moisés recibió los Mandamientos. Durante nuestro viaje terrenal son los postes que nos guían hacia el Trono de Dios. Él es la Luz, el Fuego que quema pero no se consume, la fuente de toda santidad ante quien y en quien estamos destinados a vivir para siempre. ¡Dios mismo quiere ser nuestra herencia cuando entramos en la vida eterna!
A menudo sonrío cuando pienso en un incidente que tuvo lugar en St. Catherine’s en Israel. Nos paramos frente al próspero Zarza Ardiente. Uno de nuestros compañeros se sintió obligado a llevarse un recuerdo, y extendió la mano para arrancar una de las exuberantes hojas verdes. Pero con un ‘¡ay!’ Rápidamente retiró la mano. Al mostrárnoslo, vimos una huella perfecta de la hoja, como si estuviera quemada en el pulgar y el índice. Con las lecturas de hoy en mente, Dios parece habernos dicho: “Ahora no, hijos míos. Más tarde en el Lugar Santísimo en el Cielo”.
San Pablo piensa en las malas tendencias y acciones que han llevado a otros a una vida pecaminosa y a la muerte a la destrucción. Exige un proceder más sabio: “Estas cosas les sucedieron como ejemplo, y han sido escritas como advertencia para nosotros, sobre quienes ha llegado el fin de los siglos con la muerte”. Nunca te canses de vivir una buena vida.
¡Orar! Jesús aconseja que no se crean mejores de lo que se pensaba que eran pecadores, como los que mueren por ejecución bajo Pilato, o por accidente en la torre derrumbada de Silo, “Pero yo os digo que si no os arrepentís, todos pereceréis como ellos”. No agotes la misericordia de Dios pecado tras pecado, “El que piensa que está seguro, que tenga cuidado de no caer”.
Pablo: “Te imploramos… reconciliaos con Dios”.
