(Bellflower, California) – On Saturday, April 12th, the Pre-SYLC Workshop brought together young leaders from across the province, uniting simultaneously at three locations: St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, CA; Corpus Christi Church in San Francisco, CA; and San Luis Rey Church in Laredo, TX. Coordinated by the SYLC Executive Team and animated by the Youth Spirit Team, the day was designed to deepen participants’ understanding of Salesian Leadership and help them recognize and cultivate their God-given gifts through the Clifton Strengths Assessment.
The day began with participants engaging in lively icebreaker activities to foster a sense of family spirit, connection, and belonging. Rooted in the pillars of the Salesian Oratory Model—home, school, church, and playground—these opening activities set the tone for a day filled with growth, encounter, and faith. Youth and adults journeyed through Salesian stations that brought to life the stories of Don Bosco, Mary Mazzarello, and other Salesian saints whose lives were marked by joy, service, and holiness. Participants were invited to reflect on how they could embody these virtues in their leadership journeys.
The next session invited participants to explore what Salesian Leadership means to them and to identify role models in their communities who live out that call. These reflections gave rise to beautiful testimonies of gratitude and admiration, revealing how Salesian values are already being lived out in parishes, schools, and youth centers.
The afternoon shifted to a more introspective focus. Through the lens of their Clifton Strengths results, participants dug into their personal traits, discussing how these could be nurtured not just for self-improvement but for the service of others. These conversations encouraged vulnerability, peer mentorship, and a deeper appreciation for the unique gifts each person brings to the community.
This year’s Pre-SYLC Workshop strengthened the bonds among young leaders across the province and inspired hearts to be firmly anchored in Christ as they prepare for SYLC 2025: “Anchor Your Heart, Chart the Course!” With renewed purpose and Salesian zeal, participants are ready to lead with hope, joy, and love.
