Finding Herself: Pahtli’s Journey Toward Peace

By JC Montenegro, PhD

This summer, something quiet but powerful happened through the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC). A young leader, Pahtli, stepped into a space looking for a break and walked out with a renewed understanding of herself and her place in the world.

The Salesian Family Youth Center brought a group of young leaders to participate in the Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC), a weeklong experience in Aptos, California. Pahtli was among them. She’s always felt deeply connected to social justice and never hesitates to step up when someone needs help. But even with all her outward strength, she came carrying weight that no one could see. “I was always giving,” she said. “But I didn’t feel seen. I was running on empty.”

What she found at SYLC wasn’t just a break; it was a moment of reconnecting. Surrounded by peers, mentors, and moments of prayer that encouraged honest reflection, Pahtli allowed herself to confront what she’d been holding back. “I realized I don’t need anyone else to be happy,” she shared. “I have a community that loves me. I’m supported.”

Her transformation wasn’t loud; it came in moments of clarity. In quiet reflection. In community prayer, especially Adoration. She stopped trying to prove herself and started simply being herself.

After the conference, she joined the Salesian Family Youth Center summer program, “Camp Salesian,” where she serves as a camp counselor for third graders. She has found absolute joy in helping and accompanying her campers, offering the same kind of presence she once sought for herself.

What’s been most powerful to witness is how grounded she now feels. Knowing she’s not alone and that there’s a community behind her has helped her reconnect with her strength and her Catholic faith.

Since then, Pahtli has continued to grow. She’s holding onto the lessons, the peace, and the sense of belonging. “I already have value,” she said. “Even if I’m still figuring things out.”

These are the stories that reflect what our mission is all about. When young people like Pahtli find a place where they are seen, heard, and supported, transformation happens.
