BEUropean Erasmus+ Youth Exchange: A Week of Learning, Solidarity and Growth

(ANS – Sliema) – The Friends of Don Bosco – Malta organized an Erasmus+ youth exchange called ‘BEUropean’ that brought together young people from Malta and Ukraine for a meaningful week of exploring European identity, fostering active citizenship, and sharing diverse cultural experiences. The program aimed to raise awareness of what it means to be European, provide a safe space for open dialogue, and highlight youth voices on diversity and inclusion.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in practical workshops where they developed project ideas, learned goal-setting strategies, and gained skills in communication and social media. Visits to significant cultural and political sites in Malta, including the Parliament and St. John’s Co-Cathedral, enriched their understanding of European heritage.

During the visit to the Maltese Parliament, the Maltese and Ukrainian young people met with the Speaker of the House and members of Parliament, including Mr. Robert Cutajar, who is a past pupil of Savio College in Malta.

The President of the World Confederation of Past Pupils of Don Bosco, Mr. Bryan Magro explained how this exchange is sharing what it means to Be European and the emphasis of these young people is that “we want to live in a world ruled by peace … we are against aggression and war … young people want peace … we want our political leaders to be peacebuilders.”

Cultural exchange was a key part of the experience, with evenings dedicated to sharing Ukrainian and Maltese traditions through music, dance, food and presentations. A special focus was given to supporting Ukrainian youth, who courageously shared their culture amid ongoing conflict, inspiring all with their
resilience and hope.

As the program concluded, participants reflected on their personal growth and provided valuable feedback to help shape future exchanges. ‘BEUropean’ successfully created an inclusive environment that empowered young people to connect, learn, and build solidarity across borders.

This exchange was a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity, diversity, and shared European values. This youth exchange was another youth event which expressed how our Salesian organizations stand firmly with Ukraine’s youth, and we reaffirm our commitment to a Europe where peace, freedom, and human dignity are not only ideals, but realities for everyone.
