Salesian Missionary Bonfire Marks 150 Years Of Hope

(ANS – Buenos Aires) – In a moment of profound celebration, the Salesian Missionary Bonfire commemorated the 150th anniversary of Don Bosco’s first missionary expedition to Argentina. Held during the Jubilee Year of Hope, the gathering was both a tribute to the pioneers of the past and an invitation to rekindle the Salesian mission today.

A Missionary Bonfire of Gratitude

The event honored the arrival of the first Salesian missionaries to Argentina, who brought with them the fire of faith and the spirit of Don Bosco’s Oratory. Around the bonfire, participants expressed deep gratitude for the legacy of these trailblazers while renewing their commitment to the mission. As one participant reflected, “We gathered to offer our ‘humble and dry wood,’ just as the song says, to keep the fire of faith alive in our communities.”

After an opening presentation and welcome remarks by the Provincial, Fr. Horacio Barbieri SDB, attendees divided into small groups to reflect on two central questions: “What missionary expressions do I see in my community?” and “What missionary expressions do I see in myself?” This reflective time was further enriched by three notable contributions. Fr. Néstor Zubeldía SDB led a formation session centered on a historic photo of Don Bosco with his missionaries, using it to connect participants with the roots of the Salesian mission in Argentina. Fr. Juan Pablo Albeiro SDB, speaking from San Nicolás de los Arroyos—the site of the Salesians’ arrival in 1875—shared details about commemorative activities planned for the year. Finally, Daiana Vergara, a missionary in the Peruvian Amazon since April 2024, delivered the traditional “Goodnight” talk, challenging participants to reflect on their personal encounters with Jesus and their missionary responsibilities.

150 Years: From Celebration to Action

The anniversary was framed not as a simple “event” but as a “fiesta,” a celebration that fosters connection and community. As one speaker emphasized, “Events can be massive, but a fiesta creates connection. It invites us to prepare our hearts, forgive, and celebrate what brought us here, inspiring us to continue our mission with renewed energy.”

The Salesian Missionary Bonfire served as a powerful tribute to the past while also acting as a beacon for the future. Through reflection, prayer, and celebration, it reaffirmed the Salesian commitment to serving the young and proclaiming hope in every corner of the world.
