(Los Angeles, California) – On September 2, 2025, Fr. Itchan Laygo, the SDB Delegate of Formation, Andres Ortiz, the Site Coordinator of the Salesian Family Youth Center and I, Delegate for Mission Animation and SFYC Executive Director met with the three candidates for Salesian formation. The objective of this important gathering was to share the expectations that the delegates of Formation and Mission Animation have regarding the candidates’ involvement at the Salesian Family Youth Center.
This meeting was not the beginning of something completely new, but rather a step forward in continuity. The expectations we shared were built on the lessons learned from last year’s experiences. The document guiding this process was carefully prepared as a result of last year’s evaluation, ensuring that we start this new stage with clarity, structure, and unity of vision .
Growing Through Presence
The document emphasizes that the candidates’ participation at the SFYC is not about leadership in operations, but about hands-on experience of the Salesian charism. Their weekly commitments—assisting with tutoring, leading activities that match their gifts, and offering the Salesian “Good Afternoon” to the youth—will give them the opportunity to learn by being present and accompanying young people in meaningful ways.
Shared Responsibility, Guided Formation
In this journey, each of us plays a role of support and guidance.
- Andrea Ortiz, as site coordinator, oversees candidate activities and provides onsite feedback.
- Fr. Itchan Laygo accompanies the candidates in planning and ensures their formation goals remain at the center.
- I, JC Montenegro, work to keep the structure clear, coordinate with the team, and ensure that every step reflects the joy and spirit of the Salesian mission .
A Year to Deepen Salesian Culture
The candidates expressed their enthusiasm and desire to learn. With clear expectations, practical opportunities, and supportive guidance, this new year is an invitation to deepen their understanding of Salesian culture. It is a year to grow in communication, teamwork, and authentic accompaniment of the young—always rooted in the Salesian values of presence, joy, and care.
As we continue this journey, we celebrate not just a new beginning, but a deepening of the path we walk together—carrying forward the Salesian charisma that transforms lives and brings hope to the youth we serve.
