Every good story has a climax. The best story ever told, the History of Salvation, has its high point on the height of Calvary, and the instrument of our salvation was the wood of the Cross. We are saved by this tool of torture meant to remove Jesus in pain from the face of the earth. Instead, it installed Him forever as Savior of humanity and raised us forever from the abyss of sin to heaven’s gate. The Cross has become not the symbol of death but of Victory.
Our reading from Numbers brings us to the well-known symbol, which Jesus himself interpreted as an image of the healing power of His Cross. We often skip the reason why God’s People were being killed by the serpents. It was because they despised the bread from heaven. They called it “wretched food,” and the serpents were God’s punishment. The curing serpent raised on a pole; Jesus applied to Himself and His Cross. There are lessons here not to be missed. First, never belittle the Bread of the Eucharist, and second, it was because of the sinful disrespect of God that the serpents struck. It is because of all the poisonous sinfulness of the world that Jesus would be raised on the Cross to save us.
The reading from Philippians states who Jesus is, what He did for us, and the title He bears for all who believe. Who then was Jesus? He was God but did not cling to being God. What did He do for us? He “emptied Himself,” taking on our human nature. “He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” One should never claim that obedience to God is too difficult and give way to sin. Look to Jesus. Look to what He bore on the Cross to save us. Resist sin! Cry out, “JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!” Join Him in the “glory of the Father,” that He and His Cross have won for us.
John’s Gospel captures the theme of salvation. Jesus stated that he was the Son of God come down from heaven. “And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” That is the very best of gifts, salvation! John also unveils for us the Father’s motive: “God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

Toda buena historia tiene un clímax. La mejor historia jamás contada, la Historia de la Salvación también, tiene su punto culminante en la altura del Calvario, y el instrumento de nuestra salvación fue el madero de la Cruz. Somos salvos por esta herramienta de tortura destinada a eliminar a Jesús de la faz de la tierra. En cambio, lo instaló para siempre como Salvador de la humanidad y nos elevó para siempre del abismo del pecado a la puerta del cielo. La Cruz se ha convertido no en el símbolo de la muerte sino de la Victoria.
Nuestra lectura de Números nos lleva al conocido símbolo que Jesús mismo interpretó como una imagen del poder sanador de su cruz. A menudo omitimos la razón por la cual el Pueblo de Dios estaba siendo asesinado por las serpientes. Era porque despreciaban el pan del cielo. Lo llamaban “comida miserable”, y las serpientes eran el castigo de Dios. La serpiente que se cura se levantó sobre un asta; Jesús se aplicó a sí mismo y a su cruz. Aquí hay lecciones que no debe perderse. Primero, nunca menosprecies el Pan de la Eucaristía, y segundo, fue debido a la falta de respeto pecaminoso de Dios que las serpientes atacaron. Es debido a toda la pecaminosidad venenosa del mundo que Jesús nos resucitaría en la Cruz para salvarnos.
La lectura de Filipenses dice quién es Jesús, qué hizo por nosotros y el título que lleva para todos los que creen. ¿Quién era entonces Jesús? Él era Dios, pero no se aferraba a ser Dios. ¿Qué hizo Él por nosotros? Él “se despojó de sí mismo“, asumiendo nuestra naturaleza humana. “Se humilló a sí mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz”. Uno nunca debe afirmar que la obediencia a Dios es demasiado difícil y ceder al pecado. Mira a Jesús. Mira lo que Él llevó en la Cruz para salvarnos. ¡Resiste el pecado! Grita: “¡JESUCRISTO ES EL SEÑOR!” Únámonos a Él en la “gloria del Padre”, que Él y Su Cruz han ganado para nosotros.
El Evangelio de Juan captura el tema de la salvación. Jesús declaró que era el Hijo de Dios que había bajado del cielo. “Y así como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre sea levantado, para que todo el que cree en él tenga vida eterna“. ¡Ese es el mejor de los regalos, la Salvación! Juan también nos revela el motivo del Padre: “Tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo el que cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna”.
