Hispanic Heritage Foundations Youth Award in Journalism and Media Awarded to Don Bosco Tech Senior

By Karen Krynen, Communications Director at Don Bosco Technical Institute

(Rosemead, California) – Congratulations to Tech senior Tomás Diego Carranza (Media Arts & Technology ’26), who has been named a recipient of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Youth Awards in Journalism & Media.

Selected as one of just 30 outstanding high school students nationwide, Tomás was recognized for his commitment to service, leadership, and vision both in and beyond the classroom. He is also one of only 10 students to earn the program’s prestigious Gold Level Award, representing the top honoree from each of the foundation’s geographic regions.

Tomás will participate in the Youth Awards Virtual Ceremony on Feb. 21 and has been invited to serve as a student speaker at the foundation’s Leaders Uniting & Networking for Advancement (LUNA) Dinner & Scholar Networking Event on March 12.

Last summer, Tomás completed the foundation’s Youth Leadership Institute, where he was recognized as one of its most highly reviewed participants. Planning to major in Film & Media with a minor in Business, he credits his Media Arts & Technology coursework at Bosco Tech with igniting his passion for filmmaking. Through hands-on projects, he discovered how film seamlessly blends light, sound, visual composition, and writing to transcend traditional forms of expression and serve as a powerful vehicle for change. He has since developed a particular interest in documentary filmmaking and its ability to raise awareness around critical issues such as public health.

“The longer I spent as a student in Media Arts at Bosco Tech, the more it became clear that responsibility is essential if media is to have positive rather than catastrophic effects,” he explained. “That understanding inspires what I plan to pursue in university and in the future.”

Thank you to the Hispanic Heritage Foundation for recognizing such exceptional talent.
