(ANS – Rome) – Between 1866 and 1875, during the early years of the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Valdocco, countless testimonies of grace and providential intervention were recorded through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. While the first collection focused on dramatic healings and rescues, this second group of accounts reveals how Don Bosco and the faithful experienced Mary’s care in the ordinary struggles of daily life: financial hardship, family division, vocational uncertainty, illness, drought, and despair.
These stories, drawn from the Biographical Memoirs and the Published Works of Don Bosco, share a common thread of simple and trusting faith. Whether through a novena, a blessed medal, or heartfelt prayer, people entrusted their lives to Mary Help of Christians and experienced what they believed to be tangible signs of Providence.
Don Bosco never promoted superstition or sensationalism. Instead, he encouraged a filial trust in Mary as a loving mother who accompanies her children in every circumstance. The medal of Mary Help of Christians, often mentioned in these accounts, was understood not as a magical object, but as a visible sign of faith and entrustment.
Among the testimonies recorded:
- The Train Stopped Before Disaster (March 1873)
A train traveling from Alessandria to Turin came to an unexplained stop moments before reaching tracks damaged by a nighttime landslide. A passenger devoted to Mary Help of Christians had begun praying aloud with others after feeling sudden anxiety. All on board were saved. - The Drunkard Who Became an Apostle (October 1869)
A man enslaved by alcoholism experienced a profound conversion after his wife prayed with medals of Mary Help of Christians given by Don Bosco. He remained sober for the rest of his life and dedicated himself to helping others overcome addiction. - The Blasphemer Who Returned to the Faith (January 1872)

After multiple failed attempts to grow a vineyard in California, a family followed Don Bosco’s advice to place medals of Mary Help of Christians at the ends of the vineyard rows. The next harvest proved extraordinarily successful. - A Toothache Instantly Relieved (August 1868)
A woman suffering severe dental pain prayed with simplicity while placing a medal of Mary Help of Christians against her cheek. The pain disappeared immediately and never returned.
For Don Bosco, these events were never meant to glorify extraordinary phenomena, but rather to strengthen faith in God’s providence and encourage devotion to Mary. He frequently reminded people: “Mary did it all,” and often repeated, “Whoever trusts in Mary will never be disappointed.”
The Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Valdocco remains a lasting symbol of that faith — a sanctuary built amid hardship and sustained by the gratitude and trust of countless faithful who believed they had experienced Mary’s maternal care in their lives.
