(ANS – Port Vila) – On June 29, 2026, the pioneering Salesian community in Vanuatu began a series of community meetings to discern the future direction of the Salesian presence in the country. This initiative is part of an initial planning process designed to better understand the realities and aspirations of young people in Vanuatu and identify the most effective educational responses to their needs. The reflection process is divided into four phases.
The first phase focused on listening, research, and discussion of the current situation facing young people in Vanuatu, with particular attention given to the social, educational, and employment challenges they encounter. The community carefully reviewed data from reports published by government ministries and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). This preliminary study provided valuable insight into both the opportunities and the needs of young people today. The phase also included visits to key institutions and government offices.
The second phase centered on communal discernment, during which the Salesians reflected together on possible directions for their mission. Guided by the Salesian charism of educating and evangelizing young people—especially those most in need—the community explored practical ways to respond to local realities.
The third phase resulted in several decisions and proposals for the future. The community reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality education and training that prepares young people for meaningful employment and responsible citizenship. Among the priority areas identified were tertiary technical education at the university level and vocational training programs, recognizing the growing demand for practical skills and professional training in Vanuatu.
The final phase will include a critical evaluation of the proposal with a group of local experts from relevant fields, meetings with educational authorities, and presentation of the plan to the Provincial and his Council for final approval.
As the planning process moves forward, the Salesians remain committed to working closely with government agencies, local communities, and other partners to develop educational initiatives that respond to the real needs of young people while promoting their integral human, spiritual, and professional development.
