‘Fundraising for the Nonprofit Sector’ Masterclass: An Intensive Course on Strategy, Tools, and Practical Application at the Pontifical Salesian University

(ANS – Rome) – The nonprofit sector is facing growing complexity, marked by reduced public funding, increased competition for financial support, and a widespread need for stronger strategic skills. In this context, fundraising can no longer be viewed as a secondary activity but has become an essential function for ensuring the long-term sustainability of organizations.

The Faculty of Communication at the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS) has created the “Fundraising for the Nonprofit Sector” Masterclass to strengthen the strategic vision of fundraising while transforming it into practical, operational skills. The program goes beyond explaining what should be done—it teaches participants how to do it effectively and sustainably.

The curriculum combines up-to-date tools, with a strong emphasis on digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI), together with the expertise of professionals who share real-world experience and practical case studies. A workshop built around a real-life fundraising case allows participants to immediately apply what they have learned. The result is practical learning that translates into skills participants can use in their own organizations.

Who the program is for

The program is designed for:

  • Nonprofit managers and professionals already working in associations, foundations, social cooperatives, or other nonprofit organizations who want to strengthen or develop a more strategic approach to fundraising.
  • Early-career fundraisers who have some fundraising experience and want to build stronger methods, tools, and strategic vision.
  • Communication and social marketing professionals working in the nonprofit sector who want to integrate fundraising skills, particularly in digital communications and campaign management.
  • Project managers and program leaders responsible for social initiatives who need to develop strategies to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
  • Executive directors and nonprofit leaders, including presidents, directors, and coordinators who make strategic decisions and want to see fundraising as a key driver of organizational growth rather than a supporting function.
  • Young professionals interested in pursuing careers in the nonprofit sector who want to gain immediately applicable skills through a practical, rather than purely theoretical, approach.

The masterclass aims to help participants:

  • Understand fundraising as a strategic process.
  • Build sustainable fundraising systems.
  • Design integrated fundraising campaigns.
  • Develop practical skills in digital fundraising, crowdfunding, and AI tools.
  • Transform a social mission into a compelling case for support.

Teaching methodology

The masterclass is based on an integrated approach that combines theory with practice. The focus is not only on understanding concepts but also on applying them effectively.

The program includes classroom instruction to build a strong foundation, analysis of real-world case studies that demonstrate how fundraising strategies work in practice, guided exercises that allow participants to immediately test what they have learned, and discussion sessions designed to encourage critical thinking and the exchange of ideas.

At the center of the experience is a project-based workshop built around a specific case study. In this practical setting, participants develop solutions, make strategic decisions, and apply fundraising concepts in a professional context. The goal is to build practical skills that can be used immediately in the workplace.

Applied workshop

The workshop is the centerpiece of the program, bringing together everything participants have learned. Working through a real-world fundraising case, participants follow a structured process similar to that used by professional fundraising teams.

The workshop begins with a contextual analysis to guide strategic decision-making, followed by the development of a case for support, which serves as the foundation of the fundraising strategy. Participants then identify target audiences before designing a campaign and selecting the most effective communication channels and fundraising tools.

This comprehensive process enables participants to integrate every element into a cohesive fundraising strategy. More than simply an exercise, the workshop provides an opportunity to strengthen newly acquired skills while producing a practical, measurable, and professionally relevant final project.

The course will be taught by Nicla Roberto, Elisabetta Casali, Chiara Ceretti, Patrizia Giorgio, and Luca Pereno.
