Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait – 2027 World Communications Day Theme

(Vatican City – September 29, 2026) – The Vatican Dicastery for Communication has announced the theme for the 61st World Communications Day in 2027: “A New Gaze: Paying Attention in the Age of Clickbait.”

The theme invites Christians to reconsider how they communicate in an increasingly fast-paced digital culture, encouraging a “conversion of our gaze” so that we look at others with greater attention, love, and compassion. The Dicastery emphasizes that Christian communication is not simply about capturing attention, but about safeguarding attention as a precious resource for authentic relationships.

The message calls Christians to rediscover the way Jesus looked at others—with attention, compassion, and openness—so that communication can become an encounter rather than an occasion for judgment. In an age marked by rapid reactions and superficial digital interactions, Christians are encouraged to “look, hear, and feel again” in response to Christ’s call.

World Communications Day 2027 will be observed on May 9 in many countries, including the United States, England and Wales, France, Spain, Poland, and Italy. Other countries will celebrate it on dates established by their respective Bishops’ Conferences.
