The vibrant participation of young people and leaders from the Salesian Family of the Western United States on day #3 of World Youth Day in Lisbon was marked by spiritual growth, fellowship, and a powerful message of social justice and inclusion. The day commenced with an engaging catechism session, where representatives of St. Dominic Savio Parish and the Salesian Family Youth Center joined others to explore the theme of social justice or social charity.
Led by the Bishop of the Diocese of Tarazona, Don Vicente Rebollo Mozas, and accompanied by a talented musical youth group, the catechism centered around the Gospel episode of The Wedding of Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle by turning water into wine. The central message from the passage was to become “containers” for the transformative power of Jesus, converting the metaphorical water of everyday life into the wine of compassion, justice, and love for others.
Following the inspiring presentation, participants were invited to discuss important questions in small groups. These questions aimed to provoke introspection and encourage the attendees to reflect on their attitudes and actions towards others. The questions ranged from recognizing the needs of those around them, embracing differences, promoting inclusivity, and confronting social injustices. These thought-provoking discussions deepened the understanding of the Salesian Family members about their roles in creating a more just and compassionate society.
The second part of day #3 was a momentous occasion as the entire World Youth Day congregation came together to be in the presence of Pope Francis. The sight of countless young people and individuals of all ages, united by their faith and passion, was awe-inspiring. Pope Francis expressed gratitude to the people of Lisbon for their warm welcome and dedicated efforts to ensure the success of World Youth Day.
During his address, Pope Francis reiterated a message that lies at the core of the Salesian values – the all-encompassing love and inclusivity of God. He emphasized that the Church is a welcoming place for everyone, irrespective of their background or struggles. God, he emphasized, knows each person intimately – their names, their stories, and their faces. The Pope’s words echoed the essence of the Salesian Family’s mission – to reach out to the marginalized, to embrace diversity, and to create a community where everyone feels valued and loved.
In his closing remarks for day #3, Pope Francis emphasized that God loves each individual for who they are in the present, not for who they might become in the future. This message of unconditional acceptance and love resonated deeply with the Salesian participants, reinforcing their commitment to social justice and inclusion.
As the day concluded, the Salesian Family carried with them the profound teachings of the Gospel and Pope Francis’ message. Inspired by the theme of social justice and embracing the spirit of inclusion, they were more determined than ever to address the needs of those around them, to stand in solidarity with those who are different, and to work towards ending all forms of injustice.
World Youth Day is not just an event but a transformative experience that unites young people from across the globe, empowering them to be agents of positive change in their communities. Our Salesian Family is now even more equipped to carry out their mission of nurturing social justice and fostering a culture of love, acceptance, and compassion. As they return home, they bring with them the vibrant spirit of World Youth Day, ready to create a lasting impact in the lives of those they encounter.
In a world that often feels fragmented and divided, SDB USA West Province’s commitment to social justice and Pope Francis’ message of embracing everyone with love and understanding serves as a beacon of hope. Through their actions, they are building a brighter future, where unity and compassion triumph over prejudice and division, and where the values of justice and love reign supreme. Our Salesian Family has proven that when young people and leaders come together in pursuit of a common goal, the possibilities for positive change are truly limitless.
