World Youth Day Lisbon Day 1 and 2

By Luis Chacon

World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 has been an awe-inspiring event for the young people and leaders representing the Salesian Province of United States West. Almost 30 pilgrims from the province embarked on a journey of faith and unity, joining more than 350,000 participants from over 150 countries in a celebration of their shared beliefs and devotion.

Day #1

The inaugural Mass at Parque Eduardo VII marked the official beginning of World Youth Day. Cardinal Clemente delivered a touching homily, focusing on the biblical passage of Mary’s journey to meet Elizabeth. This theme resonated deeply with the young attendees, reminding them of the significance of stepping forward in their faith journey and embracing the call to love and act.

The first day of World Youth Day was an overwhelming experience for the participants. The sight of numerous flags representing diverse nations and witnessing the fervent energy of countless young people gathered in devotion uplifted their spirits. The magnitude of the event was evident as the streets brimmed with joy and enthusiasm.

Day #2

On the second day of World Youth Day, the delegates from our Salesian Province engaged in enriching catechism sessions at the Parochial Center of São Sebastião de Guerreiros. The focus of the day’s reflection was on caring for the environment and the planet. It spurred meaningful discussions and generated ideas for impactful actions to protect the world we live in.

Bishop Connecticut Fr. Frank Caggiano led the formation and encouraged the participants to embody the qualities of Mary—faith, love, and action. Drawing inspiration from Mary’s urgency in visiting her cousin Elizabeth during pregnancy, the bishop urged the young pilgrims to love their neighbors sincerely and act with purpose. He reminded them of the importance of responsible stewardship of God’s creation, emphasizing that love for others extends to caring for the world.

The day took an emotional and reflective turn as the group joined the World Wide Salesian Youth Movement, uniting with over 8,000 young people from across the globe. This momentous gathering was a vital component of the World Youth Day Lisbon 2023, bringing together like-minded individuals with a shared Salesian spirit.

The Salesian School “Salesianos do Estoril” hosted an unforgettable afternoon of celebration, including a concert, a captivating musical play, and a delightful dinner. The gathering also featured adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and cherished Salesian traditions, enhancing the spiritual connection among the participants.
