(ANS – Quito) – On Friday, August 7, 2026, the Familia Salesiana in Ecuador gratefully celebrated the 105th birthday of Fr. Silverio Equísoain, born in Navarre, Spain, in 1921. He arrived in Ecuador in 1955 as a Salesian missionary and was soon sent to Morona Santiago, beginning a long journey of service in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In Limón, he learned the Shuar language, came to know the local communities closely, and embraced with dedication the mission that would mark much of his life.
His missionary work also took him to Gualaquiza and other areas of the region, where he accompanied pastoral, educational, and community initiatives. He contributed to the organization of centers, the expansion of Salesian works, and the construction of facilities dedicated to education and pastoral life. His mission has always been characterized by closeness to people, daily commitment, and a desire to place himself at the service of others.
Fr. Equísoain’s witness is a concrete expression of the Salesian spirit: being present, walking alongside people, and placing one’s talents at the service of those most in need. His relationship with the Shuar people was founded on respect, learning their language, and appreciating their culture. Throughout his life, he has maintained that a true vocation requires going beyond oneself and generously giving oneself to others.
At 105, Fr. Equísoain also represents the profound mark left by the Salesian mission in the Ecuadorian Amazon: a presence that has united evangelization, education, human development, and community accompaniment for generations.
His life is a living memory of the Salesian mission and a testimony of fidelity to Don Bosco, love for the peoples of the Amazon, and constant dedication to the service of those most in need.
