In a world often filled with stories of despair and hardship, it is a breath of fresh air to witness miracles unfold right before our eyes. Such was the case at the Salesian Family Youth Center on Thursday, July 6, when a heartwarming miracle took place. As an organization that provides daily meals to children and young people, the center faced a challenge in preparing a home-cooked meal for over 200 participants attending the summer camp. However, through the power of unity, generosity, and community, what seemed like an insurmountable obstacle turned into a beautiful miracle that nourished not only the bodies but also the spirits of those involved.
The Call for Support:
Every Thursday, the Salesian Family Youth Center sought different groups to assist them in preparing a special meal for the summer camp attendees. This week, the Salesian religious community of Los Angeles, led by Fr. Marcos Castillo, SDB, took up the challenge. However, with only two days remaining, it became evident that there was a shortage of essential ingredients, such as meat, required to prepare lunch for the large group.
The Power of Compassionate Hearts:
Amidst this predicament, hope blossomed when a Salesian Cooperator, Jesús Ortega, promptly reached out to John Islas, a former member of the “Salesian Boys and Girls Club” that had closed down years ago. The Islas family, who had children attending Santa Isabel Elementary School, wasted no time in responding to the call for help. John Islas selflessly provided significant financial assistance to purchase the necessary food items, becoming a beacon of hope for the children at the Salesian Family Youth Center.
Community Collaboration:
Preparing a meal for more than 200 people requires many hands, and the local community of Saint Mary’s stepped up without hesitation. Mrs. Carmelita and Mrs. Chayito generously donated their time and efforts, spending several hours to ensure the food was prepared on time. Additionally, Br. Khoa and Br. Thomas SDB, who are providing their summer pastoral service at the Salesian Family Youth Center, joined forces with Fr. Marcos to lend their expertise in food preparation and service.
The True Miracle:
Some may interpret the biblical account of feeding over 4,000 people with a few loaves and fishes as a miracle of multiplication. However, a deeper understanding reveals that the true miracle lies in the act of people coming together and sharing what they have with one another. This profound sense of unity and selflessness was mirrored at the Salesian Family Youth Center. The miracle that unfolded was not solely about the multiplication of pasta and salad but rather the convergence of families and the Salesian community, uniting their efforts to feed more than 200 hungry individuals.
The miracle that took place at the Salesian Family Youth Center on that memorable Thursday, July 6, is a testament to the incredible power of generosity and community. It reminds us that miracles are not merely mystical events but rather extraordinary moments that occur when individuals unite for a common cause. Through the unwavering support of the Salesian religious community, the Islas family, the dedicated volunteers from Saint Mary’s, and the Salesian Family Youth Center staff, over 200 children and young people were nourished physically and spiritually. This miraculous event serves as an inspiration for us all, reminding us of the immense impact we can have when we come together with open hearts and hands to support one another.
