“To call Christ Our King” can be rather meaningless for us in today’s United States. We have never lived under a king’s rule. But we certainly know what “authority” is, and this Sunday calls on us to acknowledge the full authority of Jesus, Beloved Son of God by Whom and for Whom all things are made. Jesus rules over this world and the next, for God has turned everything over to Him.
Jesus is the Shepherd King. He tends to all his flock. He has rescued all of us from peril and guides us to the heavenly pastures. There He gives us rest. Sometimes our families or friends, perhaps we too have strayed. Yet God still loves us. He has sought us out, healed us and brought us back to Him. All this Ezekiel tells us, and more.
Jesus raised to life is Victor King. He is victorious over death. Not only has He been raised from the dead, but He shares with us His victory. He is the first born to Heavenly Glory, and we follow Him. His Kingly authority exceeds every evil power which tries to overcome His authority. Our King conquers all evil. And, the fullness of God reigns. So says St. Paul to the Corinthians and to us today.
Jesus has spoken of wise and foolish virgins, and on using God’s talents wisely to be ready for the Kingdom of Heaven. Before His Passion and death, He spoke bluntly of Himself at the end of time. He will come in majesty and be enthroned with His Father. Sheep and goats will be gathered before Him and He the Shepherd King, will present the evil ones who had arrived empty-handed of good deeds, and they will be condemned. The good sheep God will welcome to share the joy of the Eternal Kingdom.
