Girl Scout Troop in Boyle Heights Offers New Beginnings

By Miriam Hernandez

(Los Angeles, California) – Girl Scout Troop 82563 at the Salesian Family Youth Center resumed activities for the year on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Girl Scouts are known for fostering strength and character in girls through well-prepared activities and programs. To spread awareness of this opportunity in the neighboring community, invitations were sent to local schools and Salesian parishes.

At our first meeting, my co-leader Judy Alvarez and I had the pleasure of introducing ourselves to the parents and girls, sharing details about our troop’s connection with the Salesian Family Youth Center. We’re proud to be part of this Catholic nonprofit, inspired by the work of St. John Bosco, and to foster leadership through girl-led activities. Our goal is to earn one faith patch annually, with a focus on incorporating our shared values.

We also welcomed guests from our sister Girl Scout Troop 143 at St. Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower. We are incredibly grateful to Silvia Trinidad and her daughter Camila for sharing their experiences as part of Girl Scouts, answering questions, and joining in an activity where the girls introduced themselves using “About Me” books. We also thank Dianne Lumsdaine, the troop leader who arranged for our guest speakers. We look forward to a future “Friendsgiving” activity with them.

We currently have eight girls registered, and we’re hoping more will join by October 26. In the next meeting, we’ll plan for our upcoming Investiture event on November 16, where the girls will receive their initial pins. We’ll also start working toward earning the “Girl Scouts Way” patch, which will introduce the girls to the traditions and history of Girl Scouts.

Please find further information enclosed and pass the invite on to girls ages 7 to 18 looking to make new friends and develop character, confidence, and leadership. Girls are stronger together.
