(Rosemead, California) – Through the Pomona College Academy of Youth Success (PAYS) program and the college’s Chemistry Department, rising Don Bosco Technical Institute junior, Andy Cao (BMET), is doing faculty-led research in CRISPR, a revolutionary gene editing technology that allows scientists to precisely alter DNA sequences in living cells and organisms.
Andy is able to participate in this amazing opportunity as a member of the four-year PAYS cohort program. This summer’s internship is providing hands-on experience in troubleshooting experiments, working with real data, and thinking critically about protein function and gene expression.
“This experience is preparing me for a future in biology and medicine by building both my technical skills and research mindset,” Andy shared. “It’s also helped me connect what I’ve learned in school to actual scientific questions that matter. Beyond all the research, this program has helped me narrow down the colleges that I am interested in and what I value from a campus.”
After the ambitious and hard-working junior has concluded his internship with PAYS, he’ll be conducting research at UCLA Health and Stanford University through the remainder of summer and into the ongoing academic year.
