(Berkeley, California) – The Salesian Province of the Western United States is honored to host the Interamerica Provincials Meeting, October 19 – 25, a significant gathering that brings together Provincial Superiors of the Salesian Congregation from across the continent to reflect, pray, and discern together the paths of their shared mission.

The meeting officially began on Sunday, October 19, with the Sunday Eucharist at Don Bosco Hall in Berkeley, though the Provincials had started arriving as early as Thursday. Upon their arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the local Salesian community and a commission appointed by Provincial Fr. Mel Trinidad of USA West to ensure that every detail of the event reflected the Salesian spirit of welcome, family, and joy.

Fr. Hugo Orozco Sanchez, Regional Councilor for Interamerica, opened the meeting with a message of fraternity and orientation. He introduced the schedule and structure of the week, emphasizing that the gathering’s main goal is not only to study or plan but to live as brothers, spending time together in prayer, reflection, study, and community life, as leaders in service who seek to encounter God and one another.

The first official day of the meeting took place on Monday, beginning with morning prayer and breakfast prepared by members of the Provincial House community in San Francisco. After breakfast, Fr. Alejandro Rodriguez delivered a powerful theological and pastoral reflection based on his text, “Talk for Provincials of the Region 2025.”

The talk offered a profound meditation on the paradigm of communion, drawing inspiration from Beatrice Bruteau’s theological work and the Gospel narratives of Holy Thursday. It presented communion as a trinitarian and reciprocal relationship that transcends division and fosters unity in diversity. Reflecting on Luke 22 and John 13, Fr. Alejandro proposed a spirituality of discipleship and service, where the shared table and the washing of the feet become symbols of humility, equality, and fraternal love. He reminded the Provincials that “diversity is a fact, but unity is a choice,” inviting them to reimagine authority in light of service, inclusion, and communion.

After a time of personal reflection and group discussion, the Provincials visited Salesian College Preparatory in Richmond, where they were warmly received by students who had participated in this year’s Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC). The visit was organized and led by Adrian Fulay, Coordinator of Youth Ministry at Salesian College Prep, who, together with a group of enthusiastic students, guided the Provincials through a tour of the school, proudly sharing the school’s Salesian identity and spirit.

The tour included a visit to the Salesian cemetery behind the Novitiate, followed by a celebration of the Eucharist and Evening Prayer (Vespers) with the Novitiate community. The prayer, offered in Spanish, Italian, and English, beautifully reflected the universality and unity of the Salesian family. The evening continued with a social gathering and dinner, graciously hosted by the Novice Master, Fr. Joseph Thinh Nguyen, and the formation community, who offered exceptional hospitality and fraternity.

The overall logistics, translation, coordination, and hospitality for this international gathering have been made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of the commission.

With the first full day, the Interamerica Provincials Meeting began in a spirit of brotherhood, spirituality, and renewal, affirming the shared commitment to deepen communion and strengthen the Salesian mission across the American continent.

Reunión de Provinciales de Interamérica en Berkeley – Día 1

La Provincia Salesiana del Oeste de Estados Unidos tiene el honor de ser anfitriona de la Reunión de Provinciales de la Región Interamérica, un encuentro significativo que reúne a los Superiores Provinciales de la Congregación Salesiana en todo el continente para reflexionar, orar y discernir juntos los caminos de la misión compartida.

La reunión comenzó oficialmente el domingo 19 de octubre con la Eucaristía dominical en Don Bosco Hall, en Berkeley, aunque los Provinciales comenzaron a llegar desde el jueves anterior. A su llegada, fueron recibidos calurosamente por la comunidad salesiana local y una comisión designada por el Provincial P. Mel Trinidad de USA West para garantizar que cada detalle del evento reflejara el espíritu salesiano de bienvenida, familia y alegría.

El Padre Hugo Orozco Sánchez, Consejero Regional para Interamérica, abrió el encuentro con un mensaje de fraternidad y orientación. Presentó la estructura y el calendario de la semana, subrayando que el objetivo principal de esta reunión no es solo estudiar o planificar, sino vivir como hermanos, compartiendo momentos de oración, reflexión, estudio y vida comunitaria, como líderes al servicio que buscan encontrarse con Dios y entre sí.

El primer día oficial de la reunión se desarrolló el lunes, comenzando con la oración matutina y el desayuno preparado por los miembros de la comunidad de la Casa Provincial en San Francisco. Posteriormente, el Padre Alejandro Rodríguez ofreció una profunda reflexión teológica y pastoral basada en su texto “Charla para Inspectores de la Región 2025”.

La charla ofreció una meditación sobre el paradigma de la comunión, inspirada en la obra teológica de Beatrice Bruteau y en los relatos evangélicos del Jueves Santo. Presentó la comunión como una relación trinitaria y recíproca que trasciende la división y promueve la unidad en la diversidad. A partir de los pasajes de Lucas 22 y Juan 13, el P. Alejandro propuso una espiritualidad del discipulado y del servicio, donde la mesa compartida y el lavatorio de los pies se convierten en símbolos de humildad, igualdad y amor fraterno. Recordó a los Provinciales que “la diversidad es un hecho, pero la unidad es una opción”, invitándolos a repensar la autoridad desde la lógica del servicio, la inclusión y la comunión.

Después de un tiempo de reflexión personal y diálogo grupal, los Provinciales visitaron el Salesian College Preparatory en Richmond, donde fueron recibidos por los estudiantes que participaron este año en la Salesian Youth Leadership Conference (SYLC). La visita fue organizada y guiada por Adrian Fulay, Coordinador de Pastoral Juvenil del Salesian College Prep, quien, junto con un grupo de estudiantes entusiastas, acompañó a los Provinciales en un recorrido por la escuela, compartiendo con orgullo el espíritu y la identidad salesiana del lugar.

La visita concluyó en el cementerio detrás del Noviciado, donde el grupo celebró la Eucaristía y las Vísperas junto con la comunidad del Noviciado. La oración, realizada en español, italiano e inglés, reflejó hermosamente la universalidad y la unidad de la Familia Salesiana. La jornada continuó con un encuentro fraterno y cena comunitaria, acogidos generosamente por el Maestro de Novicios, Padre Joseph Thinh Nguyen, y la comunidad formadora, quienes ofrecieron una hospitalidad ejemplar.

La logística, traducciones, coordinación y hospitalidad de este encuentro internacional fueron posibles gracias al dedicado trabajo de la comisión.

Con este primer día, la Reunión de Provinciales de Interamérica comenzó en un ambiente de fraternidad, espiritualidad y renovación, reafirmando el compromiso compartido de profundizar la comunión y fortalecer la misión salesiana en todo el continente americano.
