Canadian Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils Established

(ANS – Ottawa) – The National Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils of Canada has officially been established, marking a historic milestone for the Salesian Family in the country. During a virtual ceremony, Fr. Dominic Tran, SDB, Provincial, administered the oath of office to the newly elected national officers.

Although Canada does not have any Don Bosco schools directly administered by the Salesians, it is home to a vibrant and diverse community of alumni, including immigrants from India, Hong Kong, the Philippines, El Salvador, the United Kingdom, and many other countries. Despite differences in culture, language, and tradition, these past pupils share a common bond: they were formed by the spirituality of St. John Bosco and shaped by his Preventive System of education.

The Beginning of a National Federation

The idea of establishing a Canadian National Federation began to take shape in October 2023, when Bill Bernardo, a past pupil from the Philippines, and his wife, Roselyn, attended the Salesian Festival in Ramsey, New Jersey, at the invitation of Fr. Tom Dunne, SDB, and Sr. Denise Sickinger, FMA.

During the event, Bernardo met Bro. Dominic Nam Nguyen, SDB, World Delegate for Past Pupils, who encouraged him to consider creating a national organization in Canada. Bro. Dominic emphasized that a united federation of past pupils could become a strong and influential presence within the Salesian Family.

That inspiration led to a series of conversations and a process of discernment. By August 2025, a core group consisting of Paul Mok, Rey Padilla, Bob Velasco, Caesar Forteza, and Bill Bernardo began meeting regularly with Bro. Dominic Nam Nguyen, SDB, and Bryan Magro, President of the World Confederation of Don Bosco Past Pupils. Together, they explored the mission, structure, and potential impact of a national federation.

A Vision Becomes Reality

In December 2025, after months of collaboration, the group finalized and approved the federation’s statutes and conducted its first national elections.

Special recognition is due to Bro. Dominic Nam Nguyen, SDB, and Bryan Magro, whose guidance and unwavering support were instrumental in bringing the federation to life.

The newly formed National Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils of Canada now serves as the umbrella organization for local chapters and informal alumni groups throughout the country. As they begin their mission of unity and service, the officers entrust their work to Mary Help of Christians and humbly ask for the prayers and support of the Salesian Family and friends.
