(ANS – Lam Dong) – The 2026 Salesian Family Congress of the East Asia-Oceania (EAO) Region, held at the K’Long Retreat Center in Lam Dong, Vietnam, has officially concluded, marking a significant turning point in the commitment to serving young people. Throughout four days of grace, the delegates embarked on a spiritual journey, harmoniously weaving together prayer, discernment, and strategic planning for renewal.
A Day of Fraternal Gathering (Wednesday, August 19, 2026)
The journey of communion began in the early afternoon as the 1:30 p.m. bus transported delegates from Saigon to the Lam Dong highlands. Participants officially checked in and shared the joy of reunion during a warm dinner at 8:00 p.m.
Strengthening Spiritual Foundations (Thursday, August 20)
The Congress opened the new day at 9:00 a.m. by strengthening spiritual life through Lectio Divina, focusing on the image of the “Good Shepherd.” Following this, at 10:45 a.m., delegates engaged in the “Conversation in the Spirit” method, followed by the Holy Mass.
This process closely aligns with the region’s formation orientation, helping members grasp the art of accompaniment through mutual listening, discernment, and an awareness of God’s presence, rather than merely directing or imposing. In the afternoon, beginning at 4:30 p.m., the entire assembly focused on studying the document Animation and Accompaniment, paving the way for new approaches to consolidate Salesian identity and charism.
Global Vision and New Mission (Friday, August 21)
The second working day was deeply characterized by a shared mission and a global vision. At noon, the Congress turned its attention to the global Congress of the Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), scheduled to take place in Manila in 2028. Notably, the 2:30 p.m. presentation by Fr. Michal Vojtáš provoked profound reflection on applying the Preventive System within the context of a globalized world.
Building on these foundations, the Congress strongly called for a major shift in the mission: moving from doing things “for” young people to doing things “with” young people. This spirit demands direct involvement with poor and marginalized youth, while also strengthening the Educative and Pastoral Community (EPC) by making collaboration a regular and consistent practice.
Structural Renewal and Leadership (Saturday, August 22)
This day was dedicated to outlining renewal in structures and leadership roles. Following a discussion on the new Ratio (Formation Directory) at 10:30 a.m., a 3:00 p.m. panel discussion further explored the Salesian Family’s openness to ecclesial and cultural realities. The Congress affirmed the necessity of revitalizing local and provincial Consultative Councils, viewing them as authentic signs of unity and teamwork.
At the same time, the role of the Delegates was redefined, emphasizing the spiritual dimension over the organizational one in order to build a spirit of co-responsibility, empowerment, and the formation of lay leadership. After intensive working sessions, an excursion to the city of Da Lat and a visit to the Philosophate community at 5:00 p.m. sparked the youthful vitality of the “Oratory” spirit.
Conclusion and Departure (Sunday, August 23)
On Sunday morning, the Congress entered its final working day with a Thanksgiving Mass at 6:30 a.m., presided over by Fr. William Matthews. From 8:30 a.m., vibrant group discussions took place to outline an action plan for the next three years, adhering closely to the core priorities of formation, shared mission, structures, and the role of the Delegates.
The Congress came to a fulfilling close following Fr. William’s concluding address, which summarized the spiritual fruits of the gathering. At exactly 10:30 a.m., the delegation departed K’Long to return to Saigon. The flame of zeal from K’Long has now been kindled, urging each member to carry forth the mission of communion and the art of accompaniment, returning to ignite life within every local community.
