(California) — For the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Western United States, the passing of leadership from one Provincial to another is more than a change of office. It is an opportunity to give thanks for the mission that has been faithfully carried forward and to look ahead to the work still to come.

On Monday evening of August 24, 2026, Salesian priest Fr. Joe Thinh Nguyen was installed as the new Provincial of the Salesians of Don Bosco – USA West, succeeding Fr. Mel Trinidad. The Provincial Installation Mass, held at St. Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower, was presided over by Fr. Hugo Orozco, SDB, Interamerican Regional Councilor from Rome.

For the past eight years, Fr. Joe served as Novice Master, accompanying and forming young Salesian men during one of the most important stages of their religious journey. He now brings that experience to a much broader responsibility: guiding the Province, fostering its growth, and strengthening its Salesian identity throughout the Western United States.

One of the most fitting moments of the Installation Mass came during the presentation of the gifts. Fr. Joe’s parents brought the offertory gifts to the altar, a simple gesture that carried profound meaning.

Before becoming a priest, a formator, and now Provincial, Fr. Joe was first a son. His vocation was nurtured within a family, and on this day, his parents accompanied him once again, entrusting their son to Our Lord and to Our Blessed Mother, Help of Christians. Together, they brought forward the bread and wine — gifts that would become the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

The moment also offered a fitting image of the ministry Fr. Joe now begins. Just as his parents brought gifts to the altar, Fr. Joe brings to his new role the experience he has gained through years of listening to young Salesians, walking with them, and helping them discern God’s call in their lives. What he learned in the formation of individuals will now serve the wider Province.

The responsibility before him is significant. The Province’s mission reaches young people and families through schools, parishes, youth centers, spirituality centers, and other Salesian ministries across California, Texas, and beyond. Each year, these ministries touch the lives of more than 30,000 young people.

For Fr. Joe, the challenge is not simply to sustain this mission, but to help it grow while ensuring that the Salesian charism remains strong and relevant.

His years as Novice Master have given him a particular perspective for this task. Formation is patient work. It requires listening, encouragement, discernment, and the ability to challenge others with both honesty and care. Above all, it means recognizing the person behind the vocation and helping a young man discover not only what he can do, but who God is calling him to become.

That perspective will be valuable as Fr. Joe assumes responsibility for an entire Salesian Province. A Province, like the individuals within it, is continually growing and discerning its future. Its schools, parishes, youth centers, spirituality centers, and other ministries are called to deepen their understanding and lived expression of the Salesian charism. Lay collaborators increasingly share responsibility for carrying the mission forward, while young people continue to encounter the spirit of Don Bosco in ways that speak to their lives and the realities of today.

Fr. Joe’s formation ministry, therefore, does not end with the novitiate. The experience he gained there now becomes part of a larger ministry of service to the entire Salesian Family. He will be called to listen, discern, encourage, and help the Province recognize where God is leading it. Fr. Joe is convinced that God has prepared him for this moment.

His new ministry will help guide the Province into its next chapter — strengthening its Salesian identity, supporting those who carry out its mission, and ensuring that Don Bosco’s charism continues to reach young people and families throughout the Western United States.

Wasting no time, on August 25, 2026, the day after his installation, Fr. Joe led a discussion at the Don Bosco Mission Center in Boyle Heights–sharing his roadmap (direction) and tentative-working formation plan. Fr. Joe Nguyen was heard sharing with another Salesian immediately after his Installation Mass, “And now, let’s get to work!” Yes, let us get to the Lord’s work, together and in support of our new Provincial Fr. Joe Thinh Nguyen, SDB.

Let us continue to pray for him in his new ministry of service as father, teacher, friend, and brother.
